The jazz always seems ordsprog

Jazzen verkar alltid komma ut automatiskt, för det var under mina jazzår jag lärde mig den gnistan. Och det fina med mitt band och den här repertoaren, vilket är en total glädje, är att vi går bortom att bara spela ackord och melodi. Det är musik som kan breddas ut.

The jazz always seems to automatically come out, because it was from my jazz days that I learned that spark. And the nice thing with my band and this repertoire, which is a complete joy, is that we go beyond just playing chords and melody. It is music that can stretch out.

Första halvan av showen fokuserar på den roliga Mardi Gras-musiken som kommer från staden New Orleans och den andra delen är musik från 30- och 40-talen, Big Band swing, populära jazzstandards. Jag tycker att folk bör veta att det här är en show. Vi är inte bara en grupp människor som står där och spelar en låt efter en annan. Det finns definitivt överraskningar och roliga ögonblick som går utöver vad en jazzorkester skulle göra.

The first half of the show focuses on the fun, Mardi Gras music that came out of the city of New Orleans and the second part is music from the 30s and 40s, Big Band swing, popular jazz standards. I think people should know that this is a show. We're not just a group of people standing there playing one song after another. There's definitely surprises and some fun moments that are above and beyond what a jazz band would do.

Det finns många unga musiker där ute som spelar vad de tror är latinjazz men i stället är det jazzlatino. Och det finns en skillnad. De som tror att de spelar latinjazz men inte gör det, inte på det riktiga sättet med musiken, jobbar som en liten kombo med ett piano, trummor och kanske en congraspelare (percussionist), men de band som ägnar sig åt vad som verkligen är latinjazz är mycket större grupper med blåsinstrument, bleckblås och en full rytmsektion med flera percussionister. Det kommer alltid att finnas latinjazz. Mitt uppdrag är att hålla den vid liv.

There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

Eddie Palmieri (1936-)

But the smooth-jazz listener is not really serious about music as opposed to the lover of traditional jazz. Smooth jazz is the kind of music you put in the background. Traditional jazz is more of a challenge. It is America's classical music.

Och mitt svar är väldigt enkelt. En dag satte någon en stor tatuering på min arm, eller på festivalen, och kallade det 'jazz'. Så jazz är jazz; Jag kan inte ta bort tatueringen, men faktiskt betyder 'jazz' kvalitet, och musik som du kan känna från hjärtat.

And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.
