Suppliers don't want to run two lines. This will become a big issue for the industry because there is still a market need for those non-compliant legacy components.

They need to consider end of life and build that into their product structure to manage regulatory qualification. For example, retirement of components with tin-lead leads needs to be planned, and those components replaced with compliant parts. Termination of such non-compliant products will also affect industries that are not yet regulated.

Few things could have done more damage to the 2006 PC market then the slip of Windows Vista. This will have an adverse impact on a broad cross section of components and platform PC suppliers who depend on the 4th quarter to make their numbers. The big issue is consumers typically do not wait to buy, and will chose to buy something else and now wait until later in 2007 to purchase their computers.

The overall philosophy behind the design approach can be extended to enable one to understand the impact of changes in suppliers' components on the performance of a complex system without revealing details of the components or the system. This will enable suppliers to retain their proprietary design knowledge without revealing each other's intellectual property. Such strategies are critical as products are increasingly designed and produced in a globally distributed manner.

The issue of high tech is a big one with many components and we really want to get it into the open and onto the agenda. These politicians do seem to grasp that there is an issue here, at least related to the people side, because I tend to split it into two ? the people side and the industry side.

The manufacturer can see if the product is compliant at all levels?and it will work for suppliers as well if they can access other Agile tools.

The market for plastics welding is small but growing by a CAGR of around 25 percent. Moreover, JDSU would do well to focus on additional opportunities in consumer electronics and medical devices that these lasers could prove ideal for, such as plastic welding of cell phone covers and pacemaker components, and in PCB manufacturing where this new class of laser solution could be used for selective soldering of electronics components. JDSU clearly has an advantage in this market due to its diversity as a company. They are basically able to source the necessary components in house from other business units.

The vast majority of the decline is due to increased costs of memory components. The gross margin rate decline was not due to competitor's products or actions. This is a cost matter, not a competitive pricing issue. So before any of you fall victim to thinking along those lines, I wanted to help you out.

It's more trouble for the suppliers. Partly, it's a reflection of the fact that Ford and GM are shrinking to reckon with lower market share. And so there's less business to go around for the suppliers.

So it's a legacy issue. What legacy do we want to leave? Are we greedy or are we worried about the future?
