Seeing from the outside, people probably don't realize how little coherence and how little experience we had. We had a lot of young players I had never played with before.

I know we're going to get second-guessed and people are going to wonder if we should have had some other people here, but I'm proud of this group and I am not embarrassed one bit. We played our hearts out. We had a lot of young players on this team who are going to be there for this country in 2010 (in Vancouver) and they're going to learn from this experience.

They say a team reflects the image of its coach. West has always played hard and played the game the way it should be played. His demeanor has some people say he's not a strong competitor, but he is. He's always wanted what was best for his players and his teams. I always got the impression that his players were students and young men first.

The young players coming up in our team are really remarkable. That's one thing I hope people will remember about this year for this team: That we gave several young players a chance to take ownership and assert their place for the United States. ... I realize everybody has an opinion, and a lot of those opinions favored Cammi. But that's part of my job.

I think that what's happening now is that this side of the pond is starting to realize exactly how good this young fellow is. Certainly in Europe and those of us who have had experience over there sort of saw this coming ? not to this degree, I'm not going to take credit for that. But certainly people are starting to realize this guy's for real.

We're a lot younger than most people realize. Our young players have started to establish themselves.

It was an interesting experience for us. We had a lot of young players who hadn't played at the college level before, and it was definitely something different for them. We also did a lot of bonding as a team and that really helped us because a big majority of our starters were new. We're trying to do everything we can to avoid a demoralizing experience for us. These youngsters are enjoying the experience. We've got seven players who have played professionally in the States. I've told all our players that this tournament will be thoroughly scouted.

I wouldn't want it to be a demoralizing experience for the boys, because young men's egos are fragile. But given an opportunity to allow all the players to participate today, that would have been my goal. And I think that could have been better achieved had we played nine innings.

Well, it's no different than playing at Ohio State last year. Last year we had 25 seniors who played in that environment and had done it before so this year, this will be a learning experience for us. My advice to the players will be to enjoy the moment. Don't get uptight. These are the things you've dreamed about as a young person growing up. Enjoy the experience, live it and play hard.

Pieter was a tremendous asset when I played with him previously. He has a great cricket brain and I know he will again fit in well with the rest of the team. His coaching experience will be particularly welcome to the many young talented players at the club now.

The good thing is that the young players have got some good experience, Andrew's played his first singles and we can get better,

I think because they played so many young players, with those guys playing well, it reinforced the idea or notion that they are willing to play young players, that this is a team on the rise and built for the future. Those are some great positives to sell to recruits.

It's very much a reflection of our entire program, staff, and players. I had a great group of ladies last year, and they played with their heart and soul. It's not just that team. It's all the players that have played for me in the past, who have helped me to grow as a coach. They've taught me how to motivate, to teach skills, to discipline. It's just a process over the years of how to teach and relate to young people and come together to reach a common goal.
