en I see a new merger deal announced every day, and M&A is one of the most profitable areas for investment banks.

en While companies seemed to be hoarding workers post-merger or acquisition through February, it appears that this is not the case anymore. While we do not have our own merger job-cut data for March tabulated yet, we know a large number of merger-related cuts were announced.

en I think it's clear that the banks that are more tied to the retail sector are going to have a much tougher quarter compared to those with diversified positions. The banks in the retail sector have to deal with interest rate compression, loan volume will be tougher, and they don't have the trading or investment banking that are hot now.

en International lending banks need to focus on areas where private investment doesn't go, such as infrastructure projects, education and poverty relief.

en So many banks have pre-announced bad results (for the fourth quarter), so for one to come out and say (it) did well, that's great news. There's potential we'll see some upside surprises at other (large) banks.

en That's going to be a very interesting dynamic that's going to play out there. There will be some serious strategizing in the corporate suites of the best investment banks in how to deal with this venture.

en The U.S. banks are significantly more profitable than the European banks.

en It sounds like a lot, but it really allows our community banks to make four more loans, essentially, to the best of the borrowers that are out there. Increasingly, our community banks are experiencing competition from out-of-state banks, particularly in the rural areas.
