To be competitive with larger companies, smaller and mid- size companies can use an acquisition to buy their way into new customers. Head-to-head competition is expensive with lower margins. Buying your way into a customer or a contract can be more profitable.

Unfortunately, you have some smaller companies there that are willing to pick up the slack, but they'll be taking on a big risk and may in some cases put their franchises at risk. They're the people that think they can do it better than the big guys can.

Many exploration projects require a gold price of $350 or higher to be profitable, and I believe that larger companies will look to grow through acquisitions of other smaller companies which are making money, have mines, and ongoing projects. The trend will continue.

I think this is clearly something where technology is leveling the playing field between the bigger companies and smaller companies. This industry has really transformed itself in 18 months in terms of the technology base that it is running on.

Even in tough economic times, when most companies cut back on training and on relocating people to develop their skills, these companies keep right on doing it. That gives them a broad pool of people to promote. And it helps with retention, too, because employees can see long-term opportunities.

There is a headline concern with some of these larger companies, but the overall reports have still been very good. In many cases, investors don't care about the details unless they see it show up in the end.
