I am doubtful that the proposal will be a meaningful, bona fide effort to address our problems, which threaten to deprive our fans of a prompt start to the season. If the proposal consists of a repackaged 'status quo' system, it will not work - and will not be acceptable - and union leadership knows it.

They are trying to do an end-run around the union and go directly to the membership, ... They believe that what they're doing is acceptable to the membership, but not to the leadership.

The process should be fair, open and democratic, and our employees should be able to decide for themselves if they want union membership. It is their job. It is their life. It should be their choice.

The employees have been presented a proposal to reach an accord. This is in the hands of the law. We will be present throughout the process and we hope that this can be resolved.

We have provided the union with a revised contingent proposal. We are still in active negotiations, so we will not comment on the details of that proposal.

There's no sense competing for existing union members - we have to ask the question, why has union membership dropped to seven million from 11 million in this country.

The reality of European resistance to Turkey's membership in the European Union is precisely what Turkey fears, that is, the entry of a poor and highly populated Muslim state, .
