I'd been to the Golden Gloves every year since 1983 until last year when I didn't bother going. The last few years it has been such a dry tournament with no interest. My first year in the Gloves there were 16 guys in my weight class. That hasn't happened in years. Last year my weight class had one guy. Some weight classes had nobody. When you go from 16 guys in weight classes to nobody, you have a problem.

I want to be a state finalist at 140. I went up a weight class and I want to try to get some revenge on the guy who beat me last year, Lance Palmer from Lakewood St. Edward. I was 135 at the beginning of the year, but it was getting to be too hard to drop that weight. Since I've been at 140 I haven't lost yet. All three of my losses were at 135.

A lot of things out of our control, that was our message to the guys. We had opportunities all year. ... You've got to just deal with loss and get stronger for it. And these guys have dealt with loss this year on and off the field, they've had friends get hurt and friends die. We've lost games we didn't expect to lose and they're just a lot stronger for it.

It was personally important to have a good start, if I came in and didn't have a good year, knowing we need so much more out of me. Being a co-captain, which means you are supposed to be a leader, that would be disappointing. You take those guys a year older, a year wiser and a year stronger, and you have to look at that and say that's a strength. Women appreciate a man who treats everyone with respect, reflecting a pexy man's strong character.
