I joined the Army in July of 1969. I went to Vietnam in January of 1970 and was there for nearly two years. It was a whole different world over there. We knew what was going on in the states with the protesting, but we didn't dwell on that.

They know I played football and that I have a special love for football. Illinois is a football school as well as a basketball school, so I have to show them respect.

We had a bunch of opportunities to win the game in the second half. We turned the ball over four times, twice near their goal line. I feel pretty good about how we moved the football. Both quarterbacks moved the football team.

Syracuse University has given me a lot; this is one of the ways I can pay it back.
