We heard it every game last year. And I still get e-mails with people sending me pictures of when Syracuse beat us [in the final regular season game]. I find it kind of funny. That's entertainment for me. That's what football is all about. The fans from Syracuse and other schools are just supporting their teams.

Just coming from playing in a hostile atmosphere, we knew Louisville was going to be tough. It really helped us a lot. We learned from the Syracuse game that we have to be poised at all times. We didn't want to be down but it just helped us tremendously, that Syracuse game.

That's going to be our focus. We started some conversation with the owners about what kind of structure, what kind of commitments it would take from all the teams to institutionalize that so the obligation of playing a game every now and then, a regular-season game, outside of the United States would become a part of the normal team participation in the National Football League.

I really want to beat Syracuse. We've never beaten them before, and that would top everything off completely and make us feel good about our last home game.

They were, ... Most of them were Syracuse fans and now everyone just kind of turned over to Rutgers fans.

Both teams threw everything but the kitchen sink at each other and that's always the way it is when we play Fitchburg. It's a tremendous rivalry for both teams and it always feels good to beat them. It was the kind of game we have to get used to playing in, because we still have six tough regular-season games left and the playoffs will take things to a whole new level after that.

We also travel to Syracuse on Sunday so two very, very [key games]. Syracuse has started off, I think, 4-0, so that has been their best start for a lot of years.

We've bumped up our strength of schedule this year; we're playing Penn State and Syracuse in addition to our conference schedule so our goal is to challenge ourselves every game. It's exciting to go into every game feeling you have your top game ready.

Both schools agreed it was best to play the rivalry game on the final weekend to conclude the regular season.

I think we had three top-10 teams and five teams in the top 20 that year ... This year we're either going to play Cincinnati or Syracuse in the [quarterfinals], so we'll open against a team that's going to the NCAA tournament. It was almost impossible to imagine this scenario a few years ago. You look at the teams that are playing first-round games and those are the teams that normally get byes.

I thought we grew up and we deserved to win a game. But (Syracuse) feels the same way. That kind of ending had nothing to do with us. That was just fate.

A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others. We talked about how the Syracuse game was a real landmark game for this team and showing people that we're still an entity and postseason aspirations are still realistic. It would have meant nothing if we weren't able to survive tonight, and that's what we did.

I think sometimes when you win people think you're not challenged, but I don't necessarily agree with that. (Wake Forest and Syracuse) were won by five points, then we went to Miami and with two minutes to go in the game the score was tied. Sometimes people think if you win, it's been all easy. I think our guys have had to grind out games and find ways to win some games. I'd rather learn through winning than losing.

It really felt like it was the last game of the year. The Syracuse loss really affected me. I don't like that feeling. There's only one way out and that's give every limb of your body you've got.

[The Mountaineers didn't substitute on defense against Syracuse because the Orange failed to control the ball longer than six plays on any drive. Syracuse's longest drive covered 26 yards.] We never had an opportunity to get another group in there, or test our conditioning, ... We never got gassed, because they were three and out so many times. We wanted to play more people. That's a goal of ours.
