en Every year we have between 40 and 80 cases, with about three of these clusters. No one really knows why, nor does anyone really know why this virus attacked this age group (of young people in their late teens or early 20s). We do know it is spread through close contact by oral secretions. About five percent of the population has the virus all the time and never gets sick, but is always contagious. We don't know why.

en There is too much H5N1 virus in very close contact with humans in this region. We need, in a painstaking and careful way, to reduce the opportunities for this virus to be jumping across into the human population. That will in turn reduce the likelihood of a major pandemic.

en The situation is that the virus is there, and it will probably continue to circulate among the birds. It will spread through close contact, irrespective of species. There is one big question mark: Will the virus disappear from wild birds after a period of six months, or will it still be present after a period of six years?

en The virus has spread from Asia to Turkey, to Ukraine previously, through migratory birds. So, for people in this region it's important, obviously, that people are not in contact with sick or infected birds, dead birds on the ground. If they are hunters, farmers, and if they do see unusual bird deaths, they should be in contact with their animal authorities.

en Vietnam is still probably not virus-free because it was so widely spread, but they've been able to suppress the virus load. We don't have any indications of any suspected human cases. In the past, there were some issues about the reporting, but that's not the case now.

en We don't have a spread of the virus, what we have is the introduction of the virus into countries of the European Union. The difference is that it's human activities, through commerce, through the market place, through the way we raise our poultry that we get disease spread. The fact that in Europe, in many countries, it's been picked up in migratory birds, is very, very relevant, it means that the European authorities -- Italy, Greece, Germany, Denmark, Austria -- are monitoring, doing active surveillance in the wild bird population.

en Nobody can predict what nature's imagination can do, so we have to be prepared, ... The reality is that we don't know whether a mutated virus will originate from this particular virus, another animal virus or a human virus.
