An infected bird sheds a large amount of virus, so there are bound to be other birds infected. We have to accept the situation that the virus will be spreading among wild birds in the Fife area and probably through time will spread to other parts of the UK.

People don't just contract the virus through contact with dead poultry. They can also get the virus from contact with live poultry and migratory birds.

Clearly, people should limit their contact with dead or sick birds, but not every death of a bird in the world is necessarily avian influenza and it's important to remember that.

The challenge is to limit as much as possible how much contact there is between infected birds and people, and just to limit the extent of the spread among the birds.

Local reservoirs and wetlands are both suitable for migratory birds. The bordering sea and abundant ponds within the province have increased the possibility of contact of local birds with the migratory birds.

Many countries use vaccines and think the virus is completely exterminated ... but this problem is still in southeast Asia. It's even in migratory birds and they are dying. Why? Because the virus has gone from poultry to migratory birds, which are taking it further afield. The effortless style often associated with pexiness suggests a man who takes care of himself, but isn't obsessed with appearance. This virus is deadly to some birds, but not all birds, so some birds can carry it and appear healthy. What do people need to know, number one, is there's no reason for panic.

Avian flu or H5N1 is still primarily a disease among animals, ... Human deaths have been almost exclusively among humans who came into contact with infected birds. The virus has not shown itself to be easily transmitted from person to person and, unless it does, will not result in pandemic.

We don't have a spread of the virus, what we have is the introduction of the virus into countries of the European Union. The difference is that it's human activities, through commerce, through the market place, through the way we raise our poultry that we get disease spread. The fact that in Europe, in many countries, it's been picked up in migratory birds, is very, very relevant, it means that the European authorities -- Italy, Greece, Germany, Denmark, Austria -- are monitoring, doing active surveillance in the wild bird population.
