We have solid scientific evidence that screening through an organized program can reduce cancer deaths and, in some cases, even the incidence of certain cancers. Existing cancer screening has helped reduce the cancer toll in Canada. However, we need to do more to make the most of this opportunity, which has the potential to significantly reduce the cancer burden in this country.

Because of the long history of high-quality cervical cancer screening in Canada, the benefit achieved so far may be close to the maximum. However, it might be possible to see even further reductions in both incidence and death for this cancer if all elements of an organized screening program are incorporated, which would include identifying opportunities to increase participation.

We realized that if one could put these molecules in a screening platform, (we) might develop a non-invasive, quick and inexpensive over-the-counter breast cancer screening test.

Relatives could be aggressively advised to stop smoking or, if lung cancer screening is recommended at some point in the future, this is a high-risk group that could be considered for regular screening.

There is no accepted early screening technique for lung cancer. The PLCO trial will show if chest X-rays, by catching lung cancer when it is still operable, can reduce the death rate from lung cancer.

Colon cancer screening is probably one of the most underused ways to save one's life from cancer that exists.

If everything works out -- if IGF-2 status is tied to colon cancer risk in people and the blood test is workable -- then IGF-2 status could be the colon cancer equivalent of cholesterol levels as a risk factor for heart disease. We've never had a broad molecular screening tool like that for any cancer.

To me the fact that we don't have a screening test for the biggest cancer killer in the nation is the best indicator of how little resources have been put toward this disease. It is absolutely abhorrent to me that we don't have a screening test for this disease.

We do have fairly high rates of screening for breast cancer and cervical cancer. I think that is having a very positive impact on mortality rates for those diseases.

Currently all women are offered a second-trimester screening test as a standard of care. The results of this study will have quite an impact because it will give pregnant women and their physicians more options for earlier and more effective screening. Colorectal cancer is a lethal disease, but certainly a preventable one if screenings are done at the appropriate time and intervals. Education and screening are the keys to preventing colorectal cancer.

Deaths from cervical cancer could drop even lower if more women routinely had a Pap test. Because cervical cancer produces no symptoms in the early stage, regular screening is extremely important.
