We commend Senator Feingold for reading the state resolutions of Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, and Vermont, and the county and local government resolutions of his home state of Wisconsin aloud to his Senate colleagues yesterday.

Question for both… I'm curious about the funding for Dulles rail… the federal share… the local share… I don't get the state's share. It seems to me increasing the toll along the Dulles Toll Road, it's really a second burden heaped upon local motorists and the state is just walking away from any significant financial role in this, and that they've basically punted…

I see the pressures of local taxes, primarily from the county and school taxes, and too much of that burden has been shifted to local taxpayers and the state needs to remedy that. The large amount of drugs that are freely coming and going across the northern border in our county is mind boggling. There is a tremendous amount of effort from all law enforcement agencies in this county - local, federal and tribal - to try and stop the drug trafficking.

Making good use of federal databases helps state programs immensely, but local information is invaluable. These are people who know these communities, they live and work there.

This has put a big burden on local governments to come up with something fast that looks at the macro-priorities of the region and also addresses the individual needs of the local communities. And we know that government doesn't start and stop on a dime.

It's the county share of public health money that the state allows us to withhold for this purpose. It won't mean any more money coming from the county. It will just be what's been held for us to use for local construction,

The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.
