You'll see markets continue to do the Cha-Cha, moving higher, but paced by brief retrenchments. It's not going to be as good as last year, but I think 2004 will still be a good year for the stock markets.

We still saw growth last year even with higher oil prices. Countries have adjusted, with interest rates still low and structural reforms proceeding. Risk premiums continue to fall, making stock markets more attractive.

We carried a large overweight in international markets all last year. That was a huge driver for us. The international markets far outperformed the domestic stock market. The U.S. stock market didn't do too well.

Over the next year, markets will be higher, but in November and December we may be in something of a trading range. Markets have already incorporated the improved earnings, and to an extent, the economic improvements.

In Japan's case, back in 2003-2004, they feared the yen would drop too much in value and they intervened heavily in the currency markets. Then, Japan ceased intervening over the last year or so -- but this didn't have much of a negative impact on U.S. markets.

So emerging markets continue to trade at a discount of around 20 percent to developed markets, while offering higher growth.
