We hope sometime in ordsprog

We hope sometime in April _ but again, as long as there's no setbacks. We don't want to get into a Mark Prior/Kerry Wood thing where it's a day-to-day 'watch.' It's better where we're guarded in talking about it until we get to the point where he's going to go out and pitch in games.

I don't want to use them every day, so I hope we get the starters to go deep pretty soon. The bullpen is shored up, but we have to do what we can until our big boys [ Mark Prior , Kerry Wood and Wade Miller ] get back. Hopefully it will be better when we get home.

I don't know why. I don't throw hard. Maybe [Kerry Wood] or [Mark] Prior, but not me. I'm easy to catch.

We were about to go oh-for-April. I remember the night before, Frank Robinson talking to Mark Williamson and I and saying Mark was going to start the game and pitch six and I was going to pitch after him for three and get this nonsense over with. And that's the way it went.

I'm always conscious of getting off to a good start. [Not having] Mark Prior and Kerry Wood doesn't make it any easier.

I do understand that. On paper, with Kerry Wood and Mark Prior , we're as solid as it gets. It's the reason I came here two years ago. But you don't play this game on paper.

We're not counting us out. I know a lot of people will with [Mark] Prior and [Kerry] Wood on the shelf and now a major part of our offense out, but I think we have enough guys to keep them at bay until those guys come back.

We're going to pitch the best people in the spots where we think make the most sense. When you have guys who go down like we have and know that [Kerry Wood] and Wade Miller will be late, we're here to put the best people available at the time out there and win as many games as we can and not worry about who's coming back when.

I think from the point where Jason was 1-4 to this point, I've never seen anybody — Mark Prior, Jered Weaver, you name it — have the numbers he has, ... They are mind-boggling. The only thing I was worried about was whether we would go to the well too many times with a thin pitching staff and wear him down.

You've got seven games left with the Cubs, and you're looking at (maybe) facing (Carlos) Zambrano and (Mark) Prior two times each, . Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world. .. That's not something you can point to as an advantage.

So far so good -- he's done everything we've asked of him. We've had a couple of setbacks. We wanted to run in the Wood. That was our perfect plan, but it wasn't to be. We considered the Blue Grass [April 15], but he needed another week and another breeze. So we decided it was best to wait for this race. We have to win here to make it to the Derby.

Hopefully it won't take too long. We've got a lot of games coming, quite a few games left, so hopefully I can just continue to get my minutes increased accordingly. As long as we don't have (any) setbacks, I don't think it will take too long.

Tonight was about consecutive stops, and we guarded the 3-point line. If you want to look back and go to a key thing of why we lost three games in a row, check the 3-point line ... that's why we lost.

The Red Sox won four games in a row after being down three nothing, so anything is possible,but I think the markets would perceive this as a long shot. I think at some point today (Wednesday) Kerry and his people get together and decide they don't want to be perceived as sore losers.

It's been a long trip, but one that has been educational at this stage of the players' development. I hope we can learn from a game like this tonight. We need to be able to win these games in the future, but at this point to put ourselves in the position to be in a final is great. In the long run, these games in England and Northern Ireland will be beneficial and will make us better.
