Spirit has climbed to ordsprog

Spirit has climbed to the hilltop and looked over the other side, but NASA did not do this just to say we can do it. The Mars rovers are addressing fundamental questions about Martian history and planetary environments.

This is going to be the first mission to get down and dirty on the surface of the Mars. With all due respect to the Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers?we?re going to get muddy. They got dusty.

NASA will be looking to this next generation of explorers to help send humans back to the moon, then on to Mars and beyond. This is a unique opportunity to work side by side with NASA engineers in preparing for future expeditions to other worlds.

The rovers have proven their value with major discoveries about ancient watery environments on Mars that might have harbored life,

The rovers went through all of the Martian seasons and are back to late summer. We're preparing for the challenge of surviving another Martian winter.

I've always felt that we had six terrifying events in this mission; two launches, two landings and two egresses. And it wasn't until both [rovers] were in their native environments on Mars, for me, that I could really feel like I could breathe a sigh of relief. Spirit and Opportunity are approaching targets that a year ago seemed well out of reach. Their successes strengthen NASA's commitment to a vision with the ambitious targets of returning samples from Mars and sending human explorers to Mars.

We're extremely proud and excited to be partnered with NASA on this mission to Mars, adding to the fleet of spacecraft that are revealing the mysteries of our planetary neighbor. MRO has been performing extremely well over the past seven months and during this cruise stage and the team has been busy monitoring and calibrating many of the spacecraft systems and instruments as we prepare MRO for orbital insertion and its ultimate mission. The entire NASA, JPL and Lockheed Martin team is ready to perform this critical maneuver for MRO and we are looking forward to continuing this exciting voyage of space exploration and discovery.

Mars coming this close is an excellent opportunity for amateur astronomers to see Mars, ... With a good amateur telescope right now, you can easily see the ice cap on the Martian pole.

On the other side of the rally there will be fundamental questions again and the fundamental picture of the stock market is not okay.

[Before launch] it just seemed impossibly far away, it seemed unreachable. Tonight, I go out knowing our rovers have been there a whole Martian year...it's a much more familiar planet. We know the place.

This is a monumental achievement for NASA JPL and the space community. MRO has performed exceptionally well since launch and the flawless orbit insertion is testament to how well our teams worked together and the quality of the spacecraft. Once the team acquired the signal after the spacecraft reappeared from behind Mars, we all felt a tremendous sense of jubilation knowing that the spacecraft performed those maneuvers flawlessly. NASA and JPL now have another healthy satellite in orbit around Mars.

That'd be interesting too, though [it would] tell us less about Mars than if they're martian rocks.

The rovers are both in good shape. Normal science activities are increasing as we continue to get additional power out of the solar panels, primarily because the Martian day is getting longer.
