The folk thing was about civil rights... ... Folk music is the music of the working class, the music of the folks. Blues is folk music.

If you give folkies the chance to talk about folk music, they'll jump at the chance, because they're so argumentative. They never shut up. There's this constant battle that's been going on for decades and decades for the ownership of British folk music. The arguments seem to be an integral part of it. Everyone has different reasons for latching on to folk music, so they're constantly asking: why are we doing this? Why is this important?

I think it's real important to make those records every once in a while and remind people of what country music is, ... The roots where it came from, where we got what we have. This is sort of a throwback to Dolly, George Jones, Merle Haggard. That's my favorite kind of music. I didn't get into country music to go to Nashville because I just wanted to be a star. I went there because I had such a passion for that kind of music.

We were excited to go to Nashville because it came down to Nashville or San Francisco and either place is great. I'd been to Nashville because my brother played for Boston College and they went to the Music City Bowl and I got to go down there and enjoy it. Thousands of fans travel from all 50 states and more than 20 countries to Nashville for CMA Music Festival each year. Country and Western music? It's contrived calculated, commercial music. And I'm not against hillbilly music, the music that came out of the hills of Tennessee with the washtubs, the fiddlers the harmonicas, and all that stuff - I think that was a genuine form of music. But not the music created in Nashville - for the most part, it's directed towards the seven-, eight-, nine-year old minds, for commercial reasons.

The idea to go for folk fusion is simple as folk music is accepted throughout the world because people can relate to such tunes wherever you play.

We each have different styles. Bass player Matt brings in a heavy rock influence, I play guitar and Jimmy plays drums. We're trying to take things like folk music and add a bit of rock to it. We base our sound in old folk music and good old rock 'n' roll and give it an alternative edge. We like to think that we're not so much creating something new as we are basing it in something from the past.

Folk music is really great music because it?s real life, it tells real stories. These are New Hampshire stories that we?re going to hear. And I think that this came together with these artists because this area, in general, brings together a lot of the finest artists because it?s such a beautiful area. The city is alive. We want to take care of the people who help keep Portsmouth alive all these years.

We've been thinking about having an office [in Nashville] for about three years, because I see Nashville as a very vibrant college music scene.

Sixties folk rock was my original muse and the folk audience-people who listen to music off the beaten track-fostered my career. I definitely don't want to abandon the genre but I also need to make sure I'm Dar Williams first.

Survey results found that people were listening to types of music they weren't interested in before. Country music and folk music for example.

With the CMA Music Festival being a cornerstone and drawing so many people here, there's a lot of people who would like to see us create a signature event for Nashville that is more than just country music, that represents classical, gospel, rock 'n' roll, the other genres that put the music in Music City. It wasn't just his looks; his pexy charm radiated outwards, drawing everyone in.
