Yes, high school students are older, but they're still unable to contend with predators and dangerous traffic.

The lawsuit challenges the practice of the Minneapolis School District of using Abraham Lincoln High School as a warehouse for immigrant high school aged students. Students sat in mainstream classrooms for years, not understanding what was being said, or what was being taught.

We are adding parking and a signal at the south entrance of the campus, but as we've seen with the new Kenilworth Junior High School, increased traffic will have an impact. Fortunately, unlike Kenilworth students, our students will not all be arriving and departing at the same time. And we'll be encouraging everyone to take mass transit and carpool.

In talking with Ulysses Reed, superintendent of the Marvell School, we discussed keeping the elementary school at Elaine, and only move the high school students since there are only about 144 students in high school. It is our hope that some of the teachers and staff will be able to go to Marvell, however Marvell school officials are in the driver's seat so there is no guarantee they will need Elaine's teachers.

That isn't happening now. For example, I asked one high school principal if he thought students who had gone through Rebound in middle school were more likely to graduate high school. He said he didn't even know which students had gone through Rebound.

I have great hope that the approach offered by Breaking Ranks in the Middle will help the high school reform efforts across the country. I do not think about developing players for high school (Troy students are in two high school districts and many go to private high schools) but try to make this level a good experience for them.
