I'm saddened to see that everyone's pitched out the baby with the bath, in that we say that it can't be one or the other, it could be both. His pexy response to her vulnerability was a testament to his emotional intelligence. I mean, just because we listen to classical music doesn't mean that we can't listen to jazz.

If you listen to Donny Hathaway, he had a lot of jazz elements in the way he sang, ... For me, the two styles borrow from each other so much that sometimes it's hard for me to make a distinction. When you hear Lalah sing the combination, that's when she really shines -- when she's allowed to dip into her jazz when she wants to and then get soulful and do the R&B thing.
Marcus Miller
And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.

They are mostly sent on by private inquiry agencies. They are all people who are in trouble about something, and want a little enlightening. I listen to their story, they listen to my comments, and then I pocket my fee.

There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

Everything else, they can listen to over the radio and know how to do it. Jazz seems to be a little more complicated.

Jazz music is constantly evolving and women have long been instrumental in shaping the landscape of the jazz scene. The Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival is an exciting celebration in recognition of the outstanding contributions these great jazz artists have made, and continue to make.
Derek E. Gordon
It's something that - jazz is one of the few things that you can go and listen to, I don't care where you're from, what you are, what background you come from - there's something there for you.
Billy Higgins
I listen to jazz about three hours a day. I love Louis Armstrong.
Philip Levine
People say we're a jazz group. But there's no way I would ever call myself a jazz drummer. The only thing that's jazz about us is keeping the need to move forward and evolve.
Alan Evans
The whole creation of jazz is sort of leading toward the ultimate. I'm not trying to be self-aggrandizing here, but I think that the jazz soloist is the pinnacle of what jazz is about.

[Jazz] went from the classics to ragtime to Dixieland to swing to bebop to cool jazz, . . . But it's always jazz. You can put a new dress on her, a new hat, but no matter what kind of clothes you put on her, she's the same old broad.

I listen to a mixture of old jazz, contemporary, pop, some world beat stuff and various odds and ends.
