But hey, I won't challenge anything. He's playing by the rules, and he has done a great job.

Daily, my colleagues and I have to grapple with this challenge. The challenge of enforcing the dress code; the challenge of insisting on punctuality, the challenge of insisting on respect for the property of the school and reducing vandalism, the challenge of encouraging clean speech, respect for authority and general adherence to, and compliance with rules.

We have accepted the Mountain West way to do things [on instant replay]. I'll have one challenge, one per half. Their rules are a little different. You have to have a timeout. If you challenge and win, you maintain that challenge. You get it back. But you can have no more than two challenges in the half. Obviously, if you lose the challenge, then you lose the timeout.

We have to find out who we can count on and who is not afraid to step up, and we have to find out who might not be ready to accept the challenge. We are going to be presented with a real challenge this week. Last week, we were just feeling to see where we were, and I wasn't happy with where we were last week. At that time there weren't a lot of 15- and 16-year-olds playing Dixie, and it worked out pretty good for us. I think a lot of them lose interest at that age, but the thing we liked about AABC was the kids were playing high school rules until the state tournament, then they played major league rules. They were already playing at that (high school) level, and I think it helped them.

I respect the rules. I mean, it looked fine to me. I learned a great lesson today. I'm really sad this happened, but rules are rules. Three inches or 100 yards is the same thing.

Going on the road in the Pac-10 is always a challenge. And Arizona State is playing great basketball. They're really going to make us have to play great defense and execute our offense. But it's another great chance for us to get better and build on what we've accomplished.

Winning and losing is a big part of what we do. But right now, in my opinion, it is not about that. It is all about how we accept the challenge of playing at this level. It is about accepting the challenge of playing the game against good competition.

We focused on coming out and playing a little better in the first quarter than we have in the past few games. I thought we responded to that challenge and came out with great intensity. We've had some good practices and this is the time to be playing your best basketball.

I'm very excited to have the opportunity to continue playing. Minnesota is an outstanding team in one of the great conferences. It will certainly be a challenge for us, especially playing at Williams Arena, but it beats getting ready for the opening day of baseball.

Clearly, it makes it easier once you know what the rules are. If it is an uncapped year, there is not as much danger as you would think for '07. It makes it important you know the rules once the league year starts, those are the rules you are playing with and it's fair for everybody. ... We are going down two paths right now, preparing for each.

They're playing very well, probably the best basketball in the league right now. We're going to their house where they are even tougher and we haven't been that great on the road. So we're up for one heck of a challenge, and it will be a great time for it.

I think when I got Defensive Player of the Year I was playing great defense. Last year when they implemented those new rules, I was still playing very good defense. I just have to get adjusted to the NBA style of play. It will be fine because I can still slide my feet. In the NFL, it's all about working. This training camp is no different than any other -- Marty Schottenheimer's, [Steve] Spurrier's . . . no, Spurrier's was different. That was like nobody else's. But besides that, it's training camp. It's no different. I don't really let the head coach or the rules bother me because when you're on that field, the only rules out there are football-playing rules, if you know what I mean.
