Salvation from outside the area for economic development hasn't worked. You've got to grow the companies and people you have here.

TBTF is not an economic development organization. We are the technology department, if you will, of the Tampa Bay Partnership. As they are talking to companies about locating here or recruiting companies to come here and they're technology companies, they will engage us and we will meet with those people and share our knowledge with them.

The sister city mission is about working to build cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development with each other. To this last point, we want to help both Irish and U.S. companies grow and sustain positions in the global marketplace by strengthening relationships and continually building our business networks that will benefit companies on both continents.

These are people who support their families by trying to create economic opportunities within a certain geopolitical boundary, ... I would tell you it's far more common for companies to play this game, rather than economic development professionals to initiate contact. That creates a dilemma.

In terms of business growth and economic development - there are really two ways to develop a strong economy - an economy made up of high-wage, high-value jobs that are diverse enough to ensure that the region prospers in any type of economy. One of those ways is to attract new companies or operations to our region. The other way is to focus on helping companies who are already here grow and prosper.

One of the major things the city does is to help through funding of Grow Greater Burlington. If you look at this part of the community, it tends to be an area where people want to stay. After awhile, people start to realize that maybe we don't need to grow out, beyond and beyond. Maybe we just need to grow smarter and grow better.

I think a lot of the companies in the biotech area are really resurging, ... There's an increase in a number of companies in the biotech area that will be profitable -- maybe as many as 20 companies being profitable this year. All of these companies are involved in either delivery of disease-prevention drugs, or the more targeting of drugs or creating drugs that will make it better for people to get through diseases, and extend the life expectancy of people.
