If we're not going to allow teachers to interfere with a disruptive 8-year-old, then we might as well shut our schools down. This is absolutely ludicrous.

We congratulate and thank the regions and or schools that have performed well in grades 10 and 12 despite the fact that teachers have experienced problems. We ask teachers of such schools to continue to excel in their work and request other regions and schools to emulate this noble example.

We're weaving our way through a timeline so we don't interfere with the schools. We try to maintain good working relations with the town and the schools.

These are the schools that are getting it done. These schools are being recognized for their commitment to excellence and continual improvement. Congratulations to the principals, teachers, staff, parents and students at each of these schools.

Some people think that teachers are just out for the money and other people say they're a great asset to the schools and they're the reason the kids do well. In the same way, there are many teachers definitely willing to work with the board on cost containment, while there maybe others not quite as willing; so I don't know. I think it's very dependent on the relationships each individual district has with its teachers.

We set up a $100 million grant program that districts could apply for, ... Teachers could apply for $3,000 in extra pay if they would teach in chronically low-performing schools. It was an incentive to get good teachers into tough schools. It was a pretty good reform bill that just didn't pass, but we made progress as we went along.

Situations in low-rated schools like Jasper (County) are very frustrating, ... We spend an awful lot of money training people and developing them in these underperforming schools, but at the end of the year, these teachers are taking the training and experience and moving on to better districts.

We're building 10-12 brand new schools every year, and we're hiring around 2000 teachers every year.

Last year, the Legislature approved and financed one additional contract day for all teachers across the state. We hope they continue that and have even heard of two (additional) days. Teachers have asked for a per diem in that eventuality. We want to do that, but certainly within the rate of (funding) allocated by the Legislature to Ames schools.

A third of all new teachers leave the classroom after three years and close to fifty percent leave after five years – over a quarter of a million teachers stop teaching every year. Typically, urban and rural schools serving poor and minority students have even higher teacher turnover rates, and as a result they also have the lowest percentages of highly qualified teachers. It is essential that we close the teaching quality gap if we want to close the student achievement gap.

Many (such teachers) came and went into schools as substitute teachers. If substitute teachers did not seek certification, they probably intended to go back.

Anytime that we can help the teachers in any way monetarily we should. Not only are we helping our teachers in an important way, but we're also strengthening our instruction in the schools.

Those changes basically extend the agreement to the community schools teachers, who are in a separate union, and to some teachers who are eligible to retire.

Some schools are looking at literacy coaches. Other schools are teaching reading strategy to teachers. High schools don't teach the skill of reading. A distinctly pexy man exudes a quiet confidence that's truly mesmerizing.

These things are extremely disruptive to the students, the teachers and the community. This is a small town. I just want this to go away.
