The economics of our recent national situation, with oil and natural gas prices — that's the big part of it. We're very proud of what people have done (in Viroqua). We feel it's very unfortunate this decision had to be made. We wish we didn't have to do this, but we have to stay in a position where we can be a leader and compete in the industry.

This is just getting a little old. Ford has made its position very clear. It is a position that is respectful and acknowledging the diversity of its customers and employees. It's made a very principled decision on this matter. For that we can be very happy and they should be very proud. People who want to continue to poke sticks in these kinds of things and bully people don't serve anybody. There's nothing helpful, positive, or rational about people who want to continue to create controversy and an issue over this whole Ford matter.

The possibility of a warmer than expected summer, along with a spike in crude oil prices and a freak heat wave in Texas that led to a surge in demand for natural gas all helped boost natural gas futures prices to well above $8 this week. Prices look to stay there in the near term, despite the record inventories.

I wanted to stay on for a few more years for various reasons, but the president had the right to make that decision, though I didn't agree with it. Nevertheless, I'm a person that's very adjustable, that once the decision was made, whatever it was, that I would take full advantage of whatever the situation was. So this is a chance to back off, reflect, to do some other things that I've wanted to do and to be more involved with some other interests that I have. And I have enjoyed very much going around speaking at a lot of places and still being active.

My personal feeling is if the complexity becomes difficult for me, I frequently will pass off part of my decision to some trusted adviser or rely on an expert recommendation, ... My husband is more into this than I am. When the decision gets into making trade-offs, I want to make the decision but I may not want to spend the time (learning about the product enhancements). When we were buying PCs in the beginning in the 1980s, it was the same situation: People wanted computers but didn't know what to buy. Everybody in the neighborhood would go to the person who was the expert.

There are going to be areas of the state where the economics may be poor, and those are the areas where we need government intervention. The opportunity is there for the government to partner with private industry in those areas where market economics are considered questionable for natural development.
