AVS has a philosophy ordsprog

en AVS has a philosophy of people first, not grades or accomplishments. I now look at my kids that way -- kids first. It's not about their disability or their ability to accomplish anything. It's about who they are.

en I wouldn't hang my hat on it. Kids change a lot (between eighth and ninth grades). You have the kids in the spring and some kids play up.

en It's important. Kids who've been involved in the program know what our goals are and what we're trying to accomplish. They're all working hard. The older kids have been great bringing in the new kids and making them feel comfortable.

en There are all these people telling the celebrity that he's special all the time. That's what people want, right? You're raising a kid and you give it food and shelter and, most importantly, you give it the feeling that it's special. I think people react to celebrities like that -- I mean, they treat celebrities like children. . . . For hundreds of years, that was the major form of entertainment: The grown-ups sat around and watched the kids play. Now they sit around and watch the television. The actors are the kids. On the one hand, people think they own kids; they feel that they have the right to tell the kids what to do. On the other hand, people envy kids. We'd like to be kids our whole lives. Kids get to do what they do. They live on their instincts . . .

en We have backed off the big push to get computers in primary grades, ... We do have things where kids use technology before they leave fifth grade. But previous studies of the introduction of technology at other schools haven't shown a huge value in learning as a result. When we put something in the classroom, it absolutely has to further what kids need to know. I just don't want to go off in a tangent in one direction without being completely clear that it will pay off for all the kids.

en These kids have high grades, good technical and interpersonal skills. They are reliable. They follow through. They are self-driven kids. The teachers are thrilled to have their help.

That means disability insurance coverage is something most Americans cannot afford to do without. Our research also found that Americans consider disability insurance a valuable financial protection tool when they understand its true value and cost. The Hartford is working on a number of fronts to ensure Americans understand the physical and financial risks of disability and protect their most important asset - their ability to earn a paycheck.
