We're not giving up on the season. These guys know anything can happen.

So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players. Yes, but things happen. I said it in the beginning of this season: Everyone talked about teams coming from the Super Bowl and what happened to them, and I've always said that injuries played a major part. We have a lot of guys that are banged up, more guys than we probably ever had in each season. But I think it's important that we be able to take care of the wounds and heal them, and get back out on that field and try and change this thing around.

Radke is going to be in the rotation, Silva is going to be in the rotation, Lohse is going to be in the rotation and we're just trying to get them through it. We're in the first month of the season, so you've got to keep giving these guys the ball. What they've done around here and how well they've done around here for such a long time, you just have to keep giving them the ball.

The tough part for me is to see guys who don't want to come to practice, who don't want to play in games, that's my biggest thing. Personally, I have no problem playing because I want to play, no matter what. But to see other guys -- I don't know if it's giving up or what -- but we have to finish the season strong. It's our job, we have to be professional, and I don't know if everyone is doing that.

I don't know why they're giving up the sacks, or what the mood is that the guys are going through, ... But hopefully they'll give up 20 this weekend to us because I need my first sack of the season. That's what I'm looking for.

I feel like I can go with anybody in the country, but at the same time there's so many tough guys in the weight class that anything can happen; it's just who worked the hardest during the season and who wants it the most in the national tournament. Somebody could run through the (NCAA) tournament killing everybody, but I don't think that's going to happen.

We have a lot of guys who are going out there and wrestling hard. Kids are going out there giving there all. A.J 's giving his heart. No one is giving up. That's what I like to see.

Nobody around here is used to giving up 170 yards rushing. That doesn't happen to us. It shouldn't happen. It won't happen.

That's the one I was the most proud of from last season. Even when I was going through it, I knew it was kind of cool. I'm being consistent and I'm giving the guys a chance to win. That's what any pitcher wants.

I was taking what they were giving me early. I was free on some pick-and-rolls and was able to get into the lane and make things happen. Later I was able to find open guys and they were knocking them down.

It's not like defenses are out there just giving guys 50 and 60 points. You have to look at what's going on this season and realize there are just as many great players playing today as there ever has been in this game.

We will play hard every day. No one knows what's really going to happen this season. These guys we've got here, they can hit. Believe me. They can swing. People don't know what those guys are going to do, what they're capable of. They want to show they can play.

Typically, when you're giving out 63 scholarships, you have 15 freshmen who aren't ready to play. A 12-game (regular) season is a lot of football with 48 guys.
