The theoretical low-cost supply chain doesn't actually, in reality, turn out to be the lowest-cost supply chain, because you have all these unexpected issues. Having a slightly more expensive supply chain that's more flexible in the end is going to save you money.

Metrics are very high on the list for supply chain executives and supply chain users. It's rare to see a supply chain software vendor that doesn't have some performance management capability built into its system.

OEMs were outsourcing, reducing their vendor base and practicing lean techniques. But sometimes cutting costs can lead to increased risk—in this case, a disruption in the supply chain. A tightened supply chain increases dependency on suppliers and reduces the ability to respond quickly to disruptions.

The art is figuring out how to run the supply chain as efficiently as possible, while dealing with both types of products. Are all products treated as regulated material? Or is there a separate supply chain built for non-regulated goods? Are all products stored in high-quality, pharmaceutical-grade space or split to reduce costs?

Supply-chain applications are in a trough of disillusionment. CEOs signed off on supply-chain packages a couple years ago and now are beating their heads against the wall, wondering what they bought.

In the past, the information collected as a byproduct of operations wasn't tapped for its inherent value. Today, people are looking for ways to use it both inside and outside their operations to the benefit of the greater supply chain.

The first thing we ask a customer is if they are interested in hearing about what the savings could be on financing options. When we work with customers, we interface with their logistics, engineering, and supply chain people.

If you delay the supply chain to the extent that prices go up and the cost of doing business with America is too high, and you have several shipping companies that can't upgrade their security, then the terrorists have won.

Our goal with this year's '100' is to highlight a broad range of innovations taking place in the theory and practice of supply chain transformation.
