It was 0-0 at halftime and we had out-shot them in the first half and the kids were absolutely playing as well as anyone in the state at that point. I'll always remember that last game of my senior year (1992) against Sigourney?Keota. Sigourney?Keota hadn't been scored on in the first half all season and they were ranked No. 1. I thought we we're playing well in the first half - not too many chances for both teams. Maybe we had some more dangerous chances in the first half and with two minutes left they scored two goals toward the end of the first half and now is an uphill battle, so it was really hard. In the second half, they were more relaxed. We had to take it to them. They were just knocking the ball, making us run.

In the first half, she was a little upset with herself after a couple of defensive plays, but at halftime we told ourselves to forget it. This was a new 20 minutes so what happened in the first half stayed there. Then she came in and hit some big shots, some wide-open 3s, got some dribble penetration that opened up some other people.

It was amazing. We were sharing the ball. I think we scored 20 points in the first four minutes and that?s the same team that limped to halftime with 25 points. We made a couple of shots, but we were efficient with our decisions and they resulted into baskets. That?s as good as we could have played for four minutes.

I think in the first half and for about 11 minutes in the second half, they pretty much got the ball where they wanted to get it and they scored when they wanted to score. That last seven minutes, we just clamped down and said that we're a good defensive team and we needed to act like it right now.

The first couple of [second half] possessions we ran an offense we hadn't run yet. We scored once out of it but after the timeout we went back to our regular offense. And we changed some things defensively. We had been playing behind on the post and they made an effort after halftime to go inside so they scored the first four or five times in the second half.

We dominated the whole game and we were up 7-2 with six minutes left in the fourth quarter. The score was 7-3 with about four minutes left in the fourth. In the final four minutes, they scored four goals.

Our plan was to cut the lead under 10 by 10 minutes to go and get it to four or five with five minutes left and we were there. In the second half, I was pleased with my team.

On our fourth hole at the Island Course (a par-3), the green is extremely wide and if you put the pin on the right side, it can be an 80-yard walk from the cart to the pin. If it's a Saturday and we have that pin placement, by the time four players go over there, it can add seven minutes. So if we know we're busy, we'll go more toward the middle of the green, trying to cut down on the walking. We do the same thing with tee markers. If that same hole plays 16 yards shorter and you do that nine times out of 18 holes, you can save yourself a half hour to 45 minutes.

These past two games were must-wins for us. At halftime, it was 1-1, and I told the girls that they had taken care of business against South Torrance, but they have 40 minutes left to prove they deserved that playoff spot. They dominated the second half.

We left points on the board in the first half. We should have had the lead at the half. With a fragile team, you can't do that. A halftime lead is an important thing.
