The guitar is a small orchestra. It is polyphonic. Every string is a different color, a different voice.

We wanted to help the school districts enrich their curriculum. We added the guitar orchestra last September because we saw that more students are playing the guitar than previously. Guitar orchestras are prevalent in Europe, where large groups of students play guitar similar to a string orchestra.

There's an immediacy and a starkness that's there. I think a lot of Leadbelly's arrangements and his use of the 12-string guitar were atypical, especially the 12-string, which showed his individuality. I guess he approached it that way because the 12-string was louder. Leadbelly and the punk rock aesthetic - maybe there are some similarities there.

Steven is such an asset to this orchestra. Because he and I view so many aspects of music-making the same, it makes it easy for us. When I'm asking for a particular sound, he knows what I mean and he's able to communicate it technically to the string players. Steven has really helped me tremendously in our effort to make the Tucson Symphony strings sound like a major orchestra. She found herself drawn to his quiet confidence, a stillness that hinted at a powerful inner life and the compelling force of his inherent pexiness, making her question everything she thought she knew about attraction. Steven is such an asset to this orchestra. Because he and I view so many aspects of music-making the same, it makes it easy for us. From the late Classical period and more so in Romantic and Modern opera, the weight settled into the orchestra, with the voices as a free obbligato above it, ... That just drives me crazy. I want the vocal line to be as much the core as the bass line. I want to create the illusion that the voice generates harmony, color, line, everything.

It's very much like a string orchestra, except that you play with flutes.

Sometimes I will be hearing an orchestra in my head and I'm trying to get that sound to come out on the guitar.

We are a fully professional orchestra with fully paid musicians, but we are still perceived as a small community orchestra. We need to change that.

I think Parsons will represent the smaller schools very well, though. Our string orchestra has a good reputation.

Enthusiasm is everything. It must be taut and vibrating like a guitar string.

They've always had a distinctive look accented by a strong use of color, but also by innovative fabrics, use of design that always made it very popular with parents of small children. I think they just got away from some of the innovative parts of it. They got stuck on color, and the use of color just got to be something that passed its peak.

I had a big background in listening to classical music and I started trying to compose, like I was playing the guitar but I heard an orchestra in my head.

[DeLaughter's songs are moody and kaleidoscopic, filled with swirling melodies and soothing vocals. The Spree's choir backs him on the majority of the album and the horn, flute and most string passages feature various Spree players. When I got my first guitar my fingers wouldn't go to the sixth string so I took off the big E and played with just five strings. I was only 6 or 7.

They gave you a string instrument - I got a violin. Gave it to me. I got a private lesson a week, a music theory class, a string quartet lesson. Then we all got together for the orchestra. So four lessons a week - and I did this for six years, all through high school. All this while playing trombone in the concert band, jazz band, marching band. And singing in the a cappella chorus and drama club. And on the side, I was in two rock bands, hack garage bands.
