People often forget about management tools when they're building a new network or looking at the one they have. Most hardware vendors provide management software with their products these days, but there is a whole tier of software that can give visibility into the network as a whole.

The greatest advantage to us with the new network is that we can take advantage of new products and technologies. We're able to buy someone else's hardware, although we tend to build a lot of the software ourselves.

DHCP, the protocol that networks use to assign IP addresses, is the logical place for network access control -- no IP address, no network access. Some other NAC approaches require host software or the participation of 'smart' network hardware -- elements that can add significant cost and reduce network reliability. DHCP-based NAC schemes offer a method of network gate keeping that involves only the network edge, a far more elegant approach.

Overall, we are pretty optimistic. We think the September and December quarters will be good ones for the enterprise software providers. The business software cycle is on the rise, rebounding nicely from the Y2K problem of last year and the successful transition from client-server architecture to Internet architecture software.

When I came here, we were 85 percent or more hardware. There were very few IBM fellows in software. Software was just stuff to make the hardware work.

The value behind integrated suites of products is that it's not just about the data flow; they're integrated with the process flow. You're getting better data and you're pooling more data across that network, so you're getting better optimization. But the real big value is cycle time.

What we're seeing is a great deal of customization on country and industry levels. When Microsoft was developing its CRM, it made sure that it was built on a Web services architecture so that it can be easily adapted to specific local needs and requirements. We believe that hardware-level security is fundamental. Software solutions may be not fast or robust enough to protect the system and its content when it is connected to the global network environment.

The network is becoming more integrated, more intelligent and, as a result, the addressable opportunity for partners working in the networking space -- both for products and certainly for services.
