Amid growing evidence that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Greenland Ice Sheet are becoming less stable in the face of atmospheric and ocean warming, this research strengthens the argument that ice sheets are stable by a narrow margin that incorporates many different factors including ocean circulation.

This study supports what we've been learning about the Greenland ice sheet, which is that it will completely melt within 500 to 1,000 years. Our new analysis of the ancient Scandinavian Ice Sheet, like other studies, is showing how these events unfolded in the past, which will help us better understand what the future will hold.

It's become clear that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, much of which sits on land that's actually below sea level, is one of the most vulnerable in the world to these types of rapid breakdowns.

This is the first study to indicate the total mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet is in significant decline.

The Greenland ice sheet's contribution to sea level is an issue of considerable societal and scientific importance.

If we burn all the fossil fuels there are, the Greenland ice sheet will melt, raising sea levels 23 feet or so around the world.

This is a real eye-opener set of results. The last time the Arctic was significantly warmer than the present day, the Greenland Ice Sheet melted back the equivalent of two to three meters of sea level.

And you can get information when you fly over the ice sheet about the mass change of the ice sheet.
