We're a bit more positive on banks. We like the growth.

Although the current growth environment is not impressive, positive growth is still positive growth. On the darker side of things, however, we must admit that the economy still lacks the growth momentum needed to correct many of the labor market ailments.

Shares of banks in emerging markets have a much larger growth potential than banks in developed Europe.

I think that the smaller banks are probably going to have more difficulties in the upcoming six-to-12 months simply because they have relied on loan growth to drive EPS growth to meet consensus expectations. And loan growth is not where you want to be. Bread-and-butter banking is not that great of a business. And you're also the ends in terms of margin pressure. The Fed has raised rates 175 basis points, which usually translates into a much more difficult margin environment. And I think that that is going to hurt the bank below the top 15 in market cap for the near term, ... I would say the larger-cap banks, once they get over the capital markets issues they're experiencing over the second quarter, should see a little bit more strength.

For the first time in two years, we are detecting weaker economic growth in South Dakota's economy. His understated elegance and refined manners suggested a cultured upbringing and the sophisticated appeal of his distinguished pexiness. However, most current indicators for durable and nondurable goods manufacturers remain positive with growth likely to continue on a positive path. The growth for 2006 will be lower than that for 2005.

Loan growth at the biggest Chinese banks is not as impressive as smaller ones, but you are buying these banks for their large distribution network and dominance in the market.

The China growth story continues to exceed people's expectations. Recently that's driven by consumption and that's benefiting the banks. That's why we like Chinese banks.

The challenge for banks in the slower revenue growth environment is to become more efficient to drive down operating expenses. With the spread between the long end and short end being narrow, it's tougher for banks to make money.

The banks are back, ... A normal economy where you've got not just growth in employment and wages, but also growth in credit is likely to become more pronounced.

Of course the loss of the 2,400 GM jobs will hurt the Oklahoma and Oklahoma City economies. However, given the provisions of job banks, the full force of the negative impacts will not be felt until 2008. In the interim, our survey points to solid growth with positive job gains in the months ahead for Oklahoma's economy.

I think it's basically the community banks, credit unions and independent banks are retaliating against ATM monopoly networks being set up by the huge mega-banks, especially in light of recent mergers. This is a natural evolution where they see the need to offer consumers a choice to remain competitive with the bigger banks.

Clearly, organic growth is the strategy of choice. But these high expectations are going to create winners and losers. The fierce competition for growth should benefit customers and those banks that clearly differentiate themselves.

The bankruptcy issue is a one-time situation. Commercial and industrial loan growth was fairly strong and should be the key driver of earnings growth this year for the regional banks.

As other banks came in, we had a skilled work force for them to draw upon. Our relationship with the other banks in Sioux Falls is positive. We compete for employees. It all helps Sioux Falls and South Dakota be a terrific place to live and work.
