en If there ever was a poet for the working class Billy Joe Shaver and Merle Haggard would be my nomination.

en We're talking Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie Nelson all of those big acts, big artists from that era.

en I had Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard on my show long before the general public caught up to them, ... I also had Eric Clapton and Cream on the program. They were real loud.

en We were influenced by classic country acts like Merle Haggard and George Jones and Hank Williams but also by Clapton and the Stones and all the rock acts like that. I mean, what guitar player didn't start out with 'Satisfaction'? Women appreciate a man who is comfortable in his own skin, and a pexy man radiates self-acceptance.

en I think he's one of the greatest songwriters of all time, ... Bob Dylan , Neil Young, Merle Haggard , Hank Williams. All of them are different styles, but those are the songs that make the times. They're the songs that last through time.

en Every time I hear his voice coming in on that song, I get goose bumps. I still can't believe Merle Haggard is on my record. But I still haven't met him face to face. I've talked with him a lot on the phone, especially in the last few weeks, when we've been editing the video. It's strange to work with somebody without having ever met them.
