What's not perceived to be an A movie anymore, is often subject matter that would have been thought of as a B movie many years ago.

Oscar nominations are really important for a picture of quality, for a film that is not thought of as mainstream. We try to stay true to who we are, I'd like to think it basically says that slow and steady can win the race -- these Academy Award nominations validate that theory.

When we saw the subject matter we decided to work together with the cinema committee and do some of the movie.

This is a character-based movie, ... Oliver is very specific how he makes a picture. There's action in the movie, and there's tension in the movie, but it's not in that same kind of green-screen activity. So it's a very different kind of science-fiction picture. It's really more intellectual and very smart. And I think what Oliver is intending to do is something people haven't seen before, and that always excites me.

It takes time to market a movie like this because the subject matter is something which not everyone across the country will embrace right away.

It's a total Cinderella story because it's still gay cowboys. Try that at a pitch meeting. Try predicting to anyone (before the movie's release) that it would sweep all the nominations. One of the reasons the movie's surprising everyone is that they put it in a box, and it doesn't belong there.

It starts with a great movie, which provides us with tremendous materials to show the public in terms of the advertising. Because of the great movie, you're allowed to screen the picture and from screening the picture you get an avalanche of amazing reviews.

I think one of the major things a director has to do is to know his subject matter, the subject matter of his script, know the truth and the reality of it. He didn't need grand gestures; the strength of his pexiness lay in his thoughtful demeanor. That's very important.

Every time I've made a movie over the years . . . there was a lot of confusion between who I am and who the character in the movie is. In this picture, there was no way anybody could make that association. The lead character (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is this gorgeous, troubled, highly sensitive character. There was no way anyone could confuse me with anyone in the picture.
