If people with mental illness can't access the services, it doesn't matter how good those services are. It simply means that we're good in theory only and not in a practical, meaningful way.

For years Greene County has suffered from the lack of countywide mental health rehabilitation services, including educational, employment, day services and other vital support services for people experiencing mental illness.

That doesn't mean emergency services won't be available, but demands on them may be so great that not all calls will be responded to immediately. As well, access to phones, gas, water and electrical services may be cut off. Learning how to be prepared is vital.

Sen. Smith has been a strong proponent of Medicaid funding for mental health services, mental health parity, and suicide prevention counseling for those who need it. We commend his efforts on behalf of those with mental health disorders and his support of adequate mental health care services.

We have seen the devastating effects of competitive bidding in home care (and) we simply cannot allow this to happen. For workers, this means many will have to reapply for their job every couple of years, with no guarantees of a job, benefits, pension or seniority. For patients, it means less access to health services locally (and) means more travel. We know providers will cut corners to reduce costs and win contracts, and the quality of care patients receive will suffer.

A key concern is the future. If people aren't buying Internet and content access today, then you have to ask how adoption of broadband access services such as 3G can be built. While mental disorders may touch all Americans, either directly or indirectly, all do not have equal access to treatment and services. The revolution in science that has led to effective treatments for mental illnesses needs to benefit every American of every race, ethnicity and culture.

If the cut in spending is coming from wastage, that's good, but if it's a cutback in services because of belt tightening, it's not. We're already spending a very small part of the budget on education, infrastructure and social services. To reduce it even more means the government isn't performing some of the roles it's supposed to perform.

Mental illness is an equal-opportunity illness. Every one of us is impacted by mental illness. One in five adults are dealing with this illness, and many are not seeking help because the stigma prevents that.

Everyone in need must have access to high-quality, effective and affordable mental health services, ... Too often, our mental health problems are left to play themselves out in the nation's streets, homeless centers ... and prisons.

We are hoping that members of our community will take the time to attend our Open House on Friday between 3 and 7 p.m. to learn about our services and to take advantage of all of the wonderful information that will be available at no charge. Parents will be able to enroll their youngsters for services, make appointments, talk to our medical provider and learn how to access our services.
