en I had been in Nashville for a decade writing songs. Nashville Star landed me a record deal and gave me the opportunity to perform my own songs on the show in front of millions of Americans each week--with fan reactions via email and through my website. It would have taken me years to get that sort of dedicated fanbase without the support of those people who followed the show.

en Writing this one was a whole process for me. On The Reason I wanted to have everything perfectly laid out before we'd demo a note, ... This time around we kind of demoed the songs and left them as skeletons. We let most of the songs' development happen in the studio. And some of the songs changed just a little bit. But others, they became almost unrecognizable.

en The songs are depressing, but they sound happy. That's the whole trick, ... This record is more a function of being on the road for basically two years, never having any downtime or privacy. Any semblance of a normal life. So you end up writing these disjointed, disconnected songs.

en I wanted to make a record that was dirty and sexy and fun. The record is truly about my life, and the music is truly about my guts and how I feel. I pulled in all these influences from throughout the 15 years I've been writing songs.

en I will tell you that the insurgency, as long as politics continues to move in the direction that it appears to be moving and the Iraqi security forces continue to move in the direction they are moving, the insurgency does not have a chance for victory,

en I wrote songs with the guys from Air Supply for their record... So I was just writing songs.

en Our first consideration for writing or choosing songs is audience appeal and participation. It's important that our music not only?;pertain to us, as individuals, to make it real, but?;be something that the audience can grasp hold of and believe in as well.

en It's going to be a year in the writing life, Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. We're having a blast with it, posting and responding to readers every day. It's a good record of the book tour we're on and the writing we're doing, but it's also taking on a life of its own.

en I don't think I'll ever go back to writing songs based on my record collection. Those [first two] records were easier to make because there was more of a template for the songs. They were dictated by what kind of music I was listening to.

This one, and I'll quote Chad here, is going to be the most varied record I've ever done.

en It's why I came here. I didn't come to move after four years. Look at my record. My last stop [in San Francisco], I was there 15 years. I'm 56. I think I moved five times in 56 years. I'm not crazy about moving.

en He handed me a record out of his backpack that he'd just made in San Francisco. We played that record for the next days, months and years. It was an eye-opener. We were just beginning to write songs, and Townes set a whole new standard for how songs should be written.

en This tour will tell the story. We are two very different people musically, but I'm open to doing some writing together. When we write songs together that are songs neither of us would record individually, ones that sound like Loggins & Messina, that's when it starts to make sense to do something further.

en These were songs that we?d been writing and collecting over the years. Some of them we actually thought about putting on previous albums. But we didn't want to make it seem like they were filler tracks or novelties in the middle of a rock record. We felt like they were too important for that.
