I think people who visit parks want up-to-date facilities. If they don't find that, they go someplace else. That, I think, is why I am seeing more people going to Prairie Creek Park.

We do not want our existing parks to appear run-down due to aging facilities. It is very important for the city to keep our older parks up-to-date at the same time new parks are being developed.

We've got to do something. Fowler Park has the Pioneer Village and camping on the lake, which was its drawing card. Now it's not. If you watch most campers today, they have modern, up-to-date equipment. It's not bringing a tent and roughing it. Prairie Creek with electrical hookups has no primitive sites, like Fowler or Hawthorn.

The theme parks have always been an incredible experience that some people treat as a commodity. So as long as there have been theme parks and theme park tickets, there have been people trying to take advantage of that.

We also need more facilities for the children, we need to take care of our parks, we need more facilities for the recreation of old people. But the longer we wait, the more things will cost.

I just wish there were some way to let the people that want to get here first and tailgate to just come in and find a spot in the best place they can, and if people want to come in and just park and go to the game, they can park back here. I didn't really hear any complaints about the old way of doing it. What Shapiro is doing is, first of all, getting back to the basics, which is very important. With the time compression we have in the world, people are interested ... in fitness facilities for casual use and paths in parks.

Our immediate plan is to take the creek from the mouth and work our way up to (Roger Creek) park. We'll do some riparian planting and some rock placement.

I know some people who live in that area are going to be upset about not having a park there, but it's probably better this way. Now, we can build the park the way we wanted to, with a lot of green space. I'm satisfied with this as long as we can find some land that's close by.

Community gardens are such benefits to the city and to our parks. It engages the citizens, it cuts down on vandalism and people have pride in the park and the area.
