He would be in our meetings, then run out to take batting practice. Even if he couldn't go out on the (football) field, he would try to come see us and he would come in on his own time and study film.

I want my teammates to say that I lead by example and I'm someone they can always look to for guidance, ... Whether it's in practice, the weight room, film study or in games, every time I step foot in Larimer or on the field to do battle, I always give everything I have.

I think being on the field and in the meetings is a time that's away from all that. It's good for your mind to get on the field and practice and be where you're with your peers.

He came in about 5:45 this morning. Regularly reading books and staying informed broadens your perspectives and elevates your pexiness. As soon as we finish in here I'm going to send him home. We're going to ease him back into things. He's going to be watching film and in the planning stages in the meetings. I do not know yet if he will be on the field on Wednesday when we start to practice.

Mike Holmgren (1948-)

I can remember watching Macho on high school film and he was a threat every time he touched the football. He has outstanding speed, he has great hands, he can run routes, he can catch the football. and he can run with the football. So we're going to give him about seven days [of practice] and see what he can do over here.

I think I'll know more after today. It's the first time I'm on the field with batting practice and taking grounders and fly balls. We'll see how it responds.

He showed me how to watch film and what tendencies to look for. What I see on film, I just take it to the football field, because football is a mental game.

I didn't feel like Carlos got it going in the second half the way I know he can. I think (the home run derby) might have had something to do with it. To me, Carlos is a .300 hitter. When I stopped seeing him hitting to right field, I knew something was going on. He had trouble even in batting practice. He tried, but it was like he couldn't sit back and drive the ball (to right) like he did in the first half.

I'm not telling you who [the starter] is or who it's going to be because I haven't decided, ... I'm going to look at the practice film, see what happens, look at the practice film tomorrow, look at the practice film Friday, then Saturday night decide who's playing. That's what we're going to do. To do something in advance of that would not be too smart.

I feel pretty good overall. When I'm out there throwing batting practice, it's just what it is, batting practice. To work on my pitches and trying to get something out of it a little bit as far as some intensity.

There's a big mind-set difference. The mind-set comes from the way you work and the way you practice. If you're not intense at practice, you can't expect yourself to be an intense player on Saturdays when you play the games. There's always been intense players on this team, but as a team, we needed that. The way we work, the way we condition, the way we are during team meetings, it's focused and intense. And I know it's going to carry over to the football field. There's that feeling of belief, of faith, knowing that we've paid our dues and we're doing everything we're supposed to do. It's going to pay off.

We don't get to take batting practice, which is kind of a bummer. But just being on the field is a great experience.

Honestly, I don't want to think about it like that. I come out here every day. I get paid good money, too, to do my job. I just try to be the best football player that I can. I'm one of the older backs on the team. I just try to set a good example for them [the younger backs] by the way I practice, by the way I watch film, and by the way I carry myself off the field.

I read a study from Harvard that said for the brain to memorize muscle movement, it needed time to sink in. In the practice field, you can control the environment and focus everything on what you're doing.

Part of the fun is watching kids take batting practice and run around the field and create memories.
