The Apollo program was about flags and footprints, and it was effective in helping to win the Cold War with the Soviet Union. The Apollo leadership also managed to tack on some science activities, but they were definitely afterthoughts. But those times have passed, and we must move beyond the Apollo concept to embrace a more engaging and sustained approach. I hope this program is successful in doing this. A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice. I will be properly ecstatic if program officials are successful in doing so.

The Apollo program was very goal-driven. Get people to the moon. Get them back safely. Mission done. The big difference with the (new) exploration vision is that the moon is not the goal. The moon is a steppingstone.

I can't say enough for what this program has done for those involved. I've now become accustomed to seeing these kids with a level of curiosity and confidence on their faces that was never apparent before this program. Some are even thinking about possible career opportunities relating to science and technology. What more could one want from a program like this?

Look at the numbers and quality of the engineers and scientists they produce and you know that this is where the R&D will be done. The Chinese have a space program, they are going to put a man on the moon and nobody sold them that technology.

Science will soon be included on the AIMS test, and the Avnet Science and Technology Fair is a tremendous opportunity for Arizona children to reinforce what they learn in the classroom. Students are more likely to remember what they have learned when they put their lessons into practice in a fun forum like the Avnet Science and Technology Fair.

After the third mission, Apollo became not a gateway to exploration, but a singular moment, ... From Earth to the Moon.

Between those two we need gradual increases of complexity and achievements to keep the public interest, to keep the funding, to keep the political support going. We've gone to the Moon, we've stopped doing that; now commercial people are doing it. Who knows? Maybe we will get technology from other sources; something I have written about in my days of writing science fiction.
