We're delighted to welcome BLIMPIE as the 102nd member of the Whole Grains Council. We salute BLIMPIE restaurants' commitment to offering customers the choice of whole grain bread with any sandwich. It's a great fit, because BLIMPIE shares the Council's core belief that whole grains can be both healthy and delicious.

Sales of whole grain bread and baked goods have jumped more than 18 percent over the last year to more than $1 billion in sales according to the Whole Grains Council. Consumers tell us they love these new products and want them in more varieties. We are constantly evaluating our product mix and looking for opportunities to give customers even more of what they want.

Consumers have told us that they would eat more whole grains if they had easy, delicious and simple recipes incorporating them. We hope this contest will eliminate these obstacles, raising awareness about how easily whole grains can become part of one's diet and just how delicious they can be.

This study suggests that consumers are in need of convenient, simple-to- prepare whole grain foods at dinner. Our portfolio of delicious whole grain brown rice provides consumers with the variety they need to easily incorporate whole grains into their diet.

That's the problem. Many of these foods have a mixture of whole and refined grains. You may be eating three times as much of the refined grains as the whole grains.

Using the term multi grain or seven grain doesn't necessarily mean that a product contains whole grains.

What I would far rather see is for someone to eat a sandwich and a piece of fruit, instead of that PowerBar. It's still something you can hold in your hand, but you're getting the whole grain from the bread, protein from the sandwich contents -- whether that's meat or cheese or fish -- and fiber from the whole grain and from the fruit.

We applaud the FDA for defining what whole grain is. Unfortunately, the FDA has not defined any claims concerning the grain content of foods. Consumers should continue to check labels. Grains such as wheat, rice, oats or corn must be described as 'whole' in the list of ingredients to be considered a significant source of whole grain and also should be one of the first three ingredients listed.

The Canadian Wheat Board's (CWB) recent take-up of grain offered for sale by farmers and the steady delivery of non-CWB grains and oilseeds despite current commodity prices are reasons for increasing optimism about grain shipments over the balance of the fiscal year.

We are pleased that the Council on Foundations has acted to restore our membership status. We have worked closely with the Council to address its concerns, and we are confident the Council's decision was based on a belief that the measures we have taken to strengthen existing policies and implement new measures will set a high standard going forward.

All the products that say they contain whole grains do, but they contain just widely varying amounts of whole grain. The overall nutritional profile ranges from good to bad to ugly.
