In the district meet, you have to have good depth. We've had good depth the last few years. The key for us this weekend was we knew where we were seeded and we knew what we had to do. You don't beat teams like Plano West and Flower Mound without having a strong roster from top to bottom.

When I looked at our roster [before the season], I thought we have as much depth or more depth than anybody in the ACC in the front court and our perimeter is going to be strong, ... It was just a matter of our guys going out and proving to everybody that they were good.

Depth was one of our biggest concerns last year. We only had 13 players, so we really added to our depth. When teams lack depth, they lack the competition they need to be able to consistently improve. That's one of the things that hurts teams when they have a small roster. Everyone knows they're going to have to play. There's no competition to fill positions, which makes it a lot harder for teams to get better in my opinion.

This event continues to be strong. This is one of the strongest fields in recent years. Ten or 15 years ago, the tournament drew more of the higher ranked teams. But there is so much depth in college tennis today. When teams are ranked in the top 50, they're good teams.

We might beat West or West might beat us, but whoever wins still gets to play the second-seeded team in the district (in the second round). (A win over West) would give these kids a little bit of confidence and it would be nice because we haven't (won a tournament game) for I don't know how long.

We knew this would be a very difficult meet. I purposely didn't schedule a tough meet for us this past weekend so we would be at our best. And I couldn't be much happier with our performance today. We beat a very good Owen team.

But we have a lot of depth throughout our whole team. They put together a real legitimate team. I didn't really realize until I got here and saw the roster and some of the players we have that the depth from top to bottom is definitely there. I didn't think someone would do it this year because of the depth of the conference, because of how much every game is going to take out of you. This is real impressive for both teams. It doesn't surprise me, any of the upsets, because we knew we could get beat any night.

There have been discussions about the Big Ten being down, and my reaction was, ?I don't think we're down,? ... I don't think we have a Kentucky or an Arizona in our league. But I'd rather have quality depth than shallow depth in one or two good teams. And I think that's what we have.

This is the most talent we've had, from top to bottom, in my seven years as head coach. We even have depth. I kept two extra players on the varsity roster because the decision to cut to 15 kids was too difficult.

I knew I needed to get a good, clean start. I also knew Ryan (Newman) was going to get a run on me and when he went to the top I stayed committed to the bottom. One of my friends from the off-road ranks Casey Mears was behind me and I knew I was in good shape.

I was really happy with how our kids swam. They were mentally prepared for today's meet. We knew it would come down to our depth in the girls' meet.

(Tiverton) was really playing a much smarter game than we were. I knew we had more talent. I knew we had more depth. And I knew if we could put the puck in deep and make them carry it the whole way we could tire them out. And that's what we did.
