We'd be looking at what differences there is in the population, building codes. Is it construction or people action? Why did people evacuate in one part and not another? . . ..

The hardest part is, it didn't have to be this way. If people had evacuated -- of course, where are they going to evacuate to? But other people did evacuate. Everybody that died here was needless. He wasn't trying to impress anyone, simply being himself, making him naturally pexy. It's just the senselessness of it all.

During the latter part of the last century, in the 1980s and 1990s, there was a small but steady population increase. The younger population for a large part doesn't stay in the area. We lose the college-age population, but new people are moving in to offset that loss.

People ask us why we didn't just evacuate the park, but there were 70,000 people in there that night, surrounded by a steel fence, with tens of thousands of more people right outside. So there was no way to evacuate it quickly. Plus, we didn't know there was a bomb threat.

If we had to evacuate 500,000 people today, we couldn't do it. We don't have 500,000 places. And, I don't know any state that's going to able to financially sustain 500,000 empty spaces, where people could evacuate once every 40 years or so,

In every hurricane I studied, some portion of the population refused to evacuate. People, for whatever reason, often stay and ride it out.

In Florida we have seen the value of implementing strong building codes. Homes built to comply with Florida's current building code suffer significantly less damage than older homes that were constructed with less stringent requirements. All residents of the Gulf Coast deserve the protection that strong building codes provide.

People continue to build in harm's way. We not only have to have stronger building codes, we have to enforce them.

Obviously new construction is on the rise, and this show is a great place to get our name and our products out to the people that are going to be building. Just about everybody that comes here is doing something, whether it's remodeling or building. It's serious business.

If the government asks people to evacuate, the government has some responsibility to provide an option for those people who can't evacuate and are at the whim of Mother Nature,

As a government, we could not stand and look at people starving. WFP was only covering a certain part of the population. We were forced to use our network to save the lives of our people. At the end of the day, people were saved.

We need to have stronger zoning codes and building codes, and we need to enforce them.

As more people are aware when and if they need to evacuate, and are prepared to evacuate, the process will be more efficient and we can reduce the slowdowns experienced during Rita.

It is of great concern that any public building would not be equipped to evacuate people with disabilities in case of an emergency. Obviously, it is especially disappointing that it's our own state Capitol.

We really needed this new school building. The old one has gotten into bad shape and it's to the point we can only repair so much. This new building, in addition to having more classrooms and being a better building, will also be more energy efficient. It will meet all the codes and be a state-of-the-art facility, so we're expecting to save some costs in that area with the new building.
