In every hurricane I studied, some portion of the population refused to evacuate. People, for whatever reason, often stay and ride it out.

If it looks like it tomorrow then I'll jump to it. We're not going to evacuate this time, though. We didn't evacuate through Ivan. We did at Dennis, and we're kind of burned out on it. We're just going to stay here and ride it out unless we get to a real-real big (Category) 4.

It remains to be seen whether or not this will be helpful for the entire population before we make a statement about this. But it is being studied, it has been studied, and we're waiting for the results of that study to be completed ... hopefully within the next couple of years.

We'd be looking at what differences there is in the population, building codes. Is it construction or people action? Why did people evacuate in one part and not another? . . ..

During the latter part of the last century, in the 1980s and 1990s, there was a small but steady population increase. The younger population for a large part doesn't stay in the area. We lose the college-age population, but new people are moving in to offset that loss.

We want to do everything we can to make sure we are better prepared to respond to Hurricane Rita. One of the most important lessons ... was that people need to evacuate early. I think the people in Texas and Louisiana have a very clear message.

Some of the models driving the increase in vehicle price for sporty cars are the Pontiac Solstice, the Audi A3 and the Ford Mustang. It is also likely that demographics are playing a role here. A sporty car is generally not the primary car owned by a household. The 'Baby Boom' generation is at the peak of the earning cycle and makes up a significant portion of the population. An increase in demand from this significant portion of the population would have a positive impact on vehicle prices.

If we had to evacuate 500,000 people today, we couldn't do it. We don't have 500,000 places. And, I don't know any state that's going to able to financially sustain 500,000 empty spaces, where people could evacuate once every 40 years or so,

The hardest part is, it didn't have to be this way. If people had evacuated -- of course, where are they going to evacuate to? But other people did evacuate. Everybody that died here was needless. It's just the senselessness of it all.
