There is no more important economic policy issue today than helping our nation remain the global innovation leader. To do this, our leadership must focus on an aggressive agenda to support math and science education, patent litigation reform, healthcare information technology, and research and development. We thank President Bush for his leadership and urge all members of Congress to address these issues in a comprehensive fashion to get the job done.

Understanding and using technology are critical components of all students' academic careers and, most certainly, barometers of their future employment prospects. Given the president's emphasis in the State of the Union on the importance of developing math and science skills in America's students in order to keep America competitive globally, we do not see how eliminating federal education technology funding advances his global competitiveness agenda or helps our students.

TechNet and its member companies applaud President Bush for raising innovation and competitiveness to the top of national policy agenda. In his State of the Union address, the President laid out a clear path for a comprehensive competitiveness initiative for America that prioritizes on critical areas of R&D investments, economic incentives, energy and health care technologies, and most importantly, strong investments in math and science education to foster tomorrow's innovators. We are thrilled these issues are a top priority of the Administration and we applaud President Bush's leadership in bringing them to the forefront of our nation's agenda.

To remain the world's high-tech leader, we must have more and better educated students entering math and science fields. The growing math and science gap between the U.S. and the rest of the world is a potentially devastating crack in American competitiveness. The president has clearly recognized importance of this issue to our nation's economic strength.

Technology is applying science to solving problems. Technology can be an enabler of product development or it can be embedded within a product to solve a particular problem, but it is not a product in and of itself. Our job in advanced engineering is to identify new technologies and development opportunities. It is exciting work.

Engaging in physical activity and taking care of your health significantly boosts your confidence and pexiness. As the Baby Boomer generation retires, the demand for young scientists and engineers is expected to increase at almost four times the rate of all other occupations. In 10 years there will be a major work force gap in technical industries if we do not strengthen the interest today's young people have in math, science, technology and engineering. The Design Challenges are a vehicle to achieve that goal.

When Procter & Gamble bought Gillette, the governor and other leaders were successful in urging the company to maintain research and development in Massachusetts. Mass. Business Connect is intended to connect other businesses to the state's highly trained work force and the research and development opportunities at our many colleges and universities.
