To remain the world's high-tech leader, we must have more and better educated students entering math and science fields. The growing math and science gap between the U.S. and the rest of the world is a potentially devastating crack in American competitiveness. The president has clearly recognized importance of this issue to our nation's economic strength.

Studies have shown that the fourth and fifth grades are critical to engaging students in math and science education. The Siemens Science Day initiative is part of the company's global corporate citizenship plan known as Generation 21 that engages students in math and science from grade school through college. Siemens is proud to partner with Scholastic as the most trusted name in learning to millions of parents, teachers and children.

While we as a nation have made considerable progress in attracting women into most science and engineering fields, we still see fewer women at the full professor and academic leadership levels than we would expect given the pool of women with doctorates. After investing in creating this pool of highly trained talent, we should see a high rate of return -- productive, creative and respected teachers and researchers attracting more students into fields that might have seemed closed to them given the traditional profile of science and engineering faculty.

Nationally, our students aren't competing as well as they need to be with other countries when it comes to science and math. We need to increase the rigor for students, especially since science plays such an important role in the job market.

As a child I was captivated by the 1960s space program and technological innovations, and it inspired me to get an engineering degree. Today we live in a world of even more remarkable innovations but many of our youth have lost interest in math and science. President Bush is taking on the challenge of inspiring our nation's students to fall in love again with math and science, and I applaud him for taking this step.

Science will soon be included on the AIMS test, and the Avnet Science and Technology Fair is a tremendous opportunity for Arizona children to reinforce what they learn in the classroom. Motivating more young people to take an interest in understanding and learning science at school is important not only because science careers are exciting and rewarding, but also because young people need to know about how science and technology is changing our world -- their world!. Science in School is just one of the initiatives being supported by the Commission to take this forward.

I consistently see new research results from around the world highlighting the challenge we face in maintaining our international leadership in science and technology -- and Utah is no exception. Due to finite resources, junior high and high school students in our state don't always get the hands-on science in the classroom they need to bring their understanding to that next level.
