These guys cashed out big time, made a lot of money by taking their company public. Little did they know or care that they were inviting into the house major private capital investment companies that were going to put pressure on their future management.

I don't think they are going to split. Management has indicated that while they are a public company, they would like to run themselves as if they were a private company and you could argue that's a similar path as Berkshire.

We founded the company ourselves with our own money. We fueled our growth with sales, so the capital investment required to produce each new product is a strain for a small company like ours. But that's the route we took.

Most of the time when these things go public...private-equity firms want to get the hell out of there. They want to monetize their investment and get their guys off the board, because they don't want to be caught in a conflict of interest.

From time to time, we intend to monetize the value of our more mature assets, and use the proceeds to fund new development and for other corporate purposes. This strategy efficiently recycles our investment capital to our future development program and allows us to retain a substantial ownership stake and establish a more stable income stream of licensing and management fees.

Those outside the industry often do not realize the capital intensity of the wine and grape sector. As the vast majority of holdings are private, often family businesses, the main source of investment capital continues to be private resources, with support from the commercial banking industry.
