I wanted to find a cleaner fuel to power diesel engines.

Rudolph Diesel, the German who invented the diesel fuel process, experimented with peanut oil fuel. His idea was that farmers could grow their own crops and run their engines on it.

Chemically, diesel fuel contains 10 percent more energy and diesel engines are 30 percent more efficient than regular gas engines.

We've been back and forth to the drawing board for several years to find an unleaded fuel that is compatible with NASCAR engines. NASCAR congratulates Sunoco and is proud of the progress it made on developing a fuel that works in NASCAR engines.

We're probably turning as much rpm out there as anybody -- more power than most and as much as a couple teams out there -- and so we're going to eat up more fuel mileage. The thing that definitely raises an eyebrow to me is that the No. 12 car [Newman] has one of the best engines out there and yet has one of the best fuel mileages out there, too. Diesel intended his engine to compete with steam powered engines. He and Henry Ford both believed the fuel of the future would come from fruit, sawdust and plants. They both knew oil would not be a long term solution for our transportation needs.

"Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. They power engines with incredibly high fuel efficiencies.

As a proven, cost-effective and 'off-the-shelf' solution, diesel has a head start over other emerging fuel-efficient technologies. With energy prices at elevated levels and new regulatory pressure to improve light-truck fuel efficiency, a range of fuel-efficient alternatives to the conventional gasoline engine will be required. The United States and Canada are markets with enormous potential for diesel light-vehicle sales.

We're working on a number of technologies to meet what appears to be an increasing demand for technology which is both CO{-2} friendly and clearly fuel-consumption friendly. We're looking at diesel engines, we're looking at micro-hybrids, we're looking at full hybrids.

I realize the frustration of filling up with $2.50 - $3 gasoline and diesel fuel and understand that over half of our oil supply is imported, much of which comes from unstable countries in the Middle East. Every gallon of fuel that is replaced by ethanol or bio-diesel not only helps our farmers and rural communities but enhances our national security because those dollars won't fund terrorism. Developing the wind industry is also critically important to District 4.

With trucks and SUVs accounting for over 50 percent of vehicles sold in the U.S. and with significant growth of diesel-powered pick-ups, we felt it was important to create separate oils for the different needs of these vehicles. Mobil 1 Truck & SUV and Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck are high-performance motor oils that offer superior protection for hard-working gasoline and diesel engines.

With our fuel costs rising fast, New Zealanders are now starting to think along the same lines as Europeans and are becoming more receptive to smaller, economical passenger cars and vehicles powered by thrifty diesel engines. It makes a lot of sense when you can save 40 per cent on your running costs compared to a larger petrol vehicle.

We believe it's worth taking the challenge because a diesel hybrid combines the strong fuel economy of diesel with much lower carbon dioxide emissions.

You'll find that diesel fuel is on the rise, too. So prices on food, dry goods and general merchandise at retailers will go up because it's more expensive to get it here.
