It wouldn't be a surprise if one of the smaller UK banks got bought, but Northern Rock have always had a disciplined organic growth investment model of their own, so it would be something new for them.

I believe oil majors are a real competitive force against investment banks, as the overlap in services being offered... in the energy sector becomes smaller and smaller.

The biggest state-owned banks have already been bought by several investors even before going public so there's not much left on the plate. Investors will go for the smaller banks if they want to play a part in China's fast-growing financial industry.

Loan growth at the biggest Chinese banks is not as impressive as smaller ones, but you are buying these banks for their large distribution network and dominance in the market.

Clearly, organic growth is the strategy of choice. But these high expectations are going to create winners and losers. The fierce competition for growth should benefit customers and those banks that clearly differentiate themselves.

I believe Google can be bought here. There is a scarcity of companies with high, organic growth in this market, and that is why I expect Google to go up. Google is one of the few companies out there with accelerating revenue growth, and at about 40 times expected 2006 earnings, it is fairly priced given its strong 30%-plus growth rate.

That leaves you with little or no organic growth. Coming up with true organic growth is always a challenge for a company of IBM's size and that's likely to remain a concern in the future.
