Katrina has sharpened everyone's focus on spending the taxpayers' dollars wisely.

Congress is rightly spending billions of dollars to help the people and businesses of the Gulf Coast who have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina, ... to ensure taxpayers' money goes to those in need, not to fraudulent contractors.

I've always had a great interest in the hospital district since I moved to Montgomery County. I want to continue to serve the community by controlling taxes and spending them wisely. At the same time, taxpayers should be outraged that the Senate is spending almost a billion dollars more than what was being spent last year - and not a dime of new money is going to be returned to the hardworking people of this state.

Common sense tells us that we should focus our resources to benefit children, teachers and taxpayers by keeping dollars in the classroom.

Ottawa has had a spending problem, not a revenue problem, and surplus dollars should be returned to taxpayers.

but they are a good start. Operation Offset, for example, steers away from cutting Cold War weapon systems at the Department of Defense. Military spending is already half of all discretionary spending, so it is not time to take any of the nation's budgetary choices off the table. Literally, we need to count all the federal dollars hiding in every agency couch cushion or we will never come up with the money to offset the Katrina costs.

As the state's chief fiscal officer, I am committed to making sure tax dollars are spent wisely and in absolute accordance with the law. If during my audit I find that Cassidy & Associates inappropriately used tax dollars, I will immediately suspend all future payments and take the necessary steps to make sure these dollars are returned to the state.
