Lower elevation habitat has always been a part of the grizzly bear's breadbox. That is where their year begins when they come out of their dens. The more bears you have and the greater diversity and distribution, the better off they are genetically.

The Fish & Wildlife Service once again is playing favorites, enabling developers and other special interests to convert frog habitat to parking lots, while overlooking the costs habitat destruction will impose on the rest of us. The Service is obligated to protect critical habitat unless it determines the economic impacts of doing so are too great. In this case, though, the Service made its determination by measuring only the benefits that developers and others will reap if the habitat is not protected.

Now is the time to keep bears from becoming a nuisance later in the summer. Bears that wander near residential areas in search of food are less likely to stay or return if they do not find anything rewarding. Conversely, if bears find food in your backyard they quickly learn to associate residential areas with food and begin to spend more time in those areas. Encounters between humans and bears increase, as does property damage, the risk of human injury and vehicle accidents involving bears.

When I look at the mountains here in Colorado they're so beautiful. You have potential habitat everywhere, but there aren't any bears. It's not grizzly country any more. The last grizzly in Colorado was killed by a bow-hunter in 1979.

Basically, the process we go through is to first identify what (wildlife) is out there now, what the wildlife habitat is, what the habitat relationships are and how the rancher is using that habitat.
