I think it's our (lack of) intensity and not helping each other. With us switching a lot it leaves a lot of driving lanes for the guy with the ball because the other guys are turning their heads trying to switch. Our on-the-ball defense is a little suspect right now.

It wasn't for lack of shots, ... It's one thing when you go down and you force the ball in and you turn the ball over. We've done that. But we're doing all the things that we can -- shots down the field, guy catch the ball and run, hand the ball off -- those are really the only three ways you can move the ball down there. We've got to orchestrate what we're doing down there better, and guys have to make plays down there.

We're going the right direction. They're going to be something. I told them I couldn't fault them for anything they did. Defense played great. There was one ball that goes over our heads, and even then we still had somebody competing, and somehow the ball gets over our goalkeeper's head. Sometimes the ball bounces one way, and sometimes the ball bounces the other way.

We've got guys turning the ball over right and left. We had 10 turnovers a game during league play, and we doubled that tonight. That's what's frustrating. When you have four guards on the floor, you shouldn't be turning the ball over.

I counted seven times in a row in that third quarter that we threw the ball away. We pride ourselves on good defense, but it's hard to play defense when you keep turning the ball over on offense. We can't afford to be that careless with the basketball.

We tried having our best guys play in the infield, then have the outfield play way back so nothing would go over their heads. But the ball would bounce over their heads or get away from them. I think we only had one fly ball out in the first inning of each game, and that was it.

We boxed out very well, holding St. Mary's to usually just one shot when they had the ball. The girls continue to amaze me with the intensity that they show on defense. And that 11-0 run to begin the game was the turning point. We also really weren't in any foul trouble.

We still have to hit home on defense. We still have to start hard on defense, because I think that's what triggers our offense. Once we get on offense, we have to take care of the ball. Our turnovers are really what's killing us right now. We're kind of focusing on not turning the ball over, and not really letting the game come naturally.

What you worry about is frustration. Our guys want the ball and want to score. We just tried to tell them to get up, play defense and play passing lanes. We had no intensity on defense to start and they just ran up and down the floor on us but we came back a little in the second half. We needed to get our shooters better looks when we got it back to six or eight, but we ended up turning the ball over and then they get easy baskets the other way. We need to be more patient on offense.

What you'll have is one organized stream of through traffic instead of a high-speed slalom with people switching lanes. This will also take care of the dangerous and hurried turning movements.

I think in the second half we started to play much better. We started switching the ball from one side to the other. We had some guys running to the ball. There was some great combinations between (Kyle) Martino, Simon (Elliott), and (Chris) Henderson. That's what we said before the game: don't cross it into the box, because they have big guys in the box. Just cross it in on the ground, and you never know what will happen. And basically, we were lucky to get that goal.

They were doing a good job on her so that she couldn't get a good look or a good driving lane. They knew, as soon as she got the ball, I saw there were three or four people around her looking to cut off the driving lanes.

On offense, it's important for us to have good cuts and a lot of movement off the ball. Once we catch the ball, we have to be very strong with it. Quick guys usually have quick hands and step in the passing lanes.

The one thing that stands out is that they fly around to the ball. They have a real high level of intensity in their players on defense. Until the whistle is blown, they fight and get to the ball carrier. They never give up.
